There comes a point in a knitter’s career where they realize they have too many projects. Maybe this doesn’t happen to everyone. I’m sure there are knitters out there who pick up a project, put it on their needles, knit it, cast off and find a new project. These people are like the readers who only read one book at a time. I applaud those people and I wish them the best, but I feel there are too many knitting projects to just knit one. Like books, each pattern gives something different. A cable pattern gives a comforting rhythm once you’ve memorized the pattern. Colorwork requires more attention and is good for knitting in bed or on a rainy day.
The problem comes when you don’t know when to stop. I’m currently having this problem. I have three projects that all require a good amount of attention, but there are at least two other projects I really want to get started. If only there was a fast forward button on finishing projects. Instead I try to convince myself adding new projects wouldn’t be crazy. I tell myself they’re pretty simple sweaters and will probably require different needle sizes anyway and then I could have a different knitting project in each room of the house. On the other hand, my fingers are starting to get calluses because of all the knitting and I’m afraid Netflix is going to call and tell me it’s not healthy for anyone to watch the amount of television I’m consuming.
I think it’s pretty obvious that if most of your house is made up of yarn and if you can’t find your family because of the piles of knitting patterns you’ve probably gone too far. But where is that more subtle line? The one where you’re not a guest on Knitting Hoarders yet, but you just can’t confine yourself to one sweater at a time. Or are multiple knitting projects like knitting polygamy? Where the rest of society is happy with one sweater at a time and I’m one of the outsiders who just can’t help myself. This is obviously a conversation we need to be having before an actual Knitting Hoarders series is required.
